Chapters 4-6
It is somewhat controversial that the N word appears in this book (watch http://www.canada.com/Global+Video+Brampton+school+bans+Kill+Mockingbird/1886535/story.html for the latest controversy). How did you feel when you first read the N word in the book? Do you think it adds to the story or takes away from it? How do you feel when other words that are not considered "politically correct" (such as saying someone is a "retard" or something is "gay") are used by your peers or in books. Explain your opinion but be sure to provide reasons for your point of view.

Its different in a book then someone actually saying it outloud. In a book its still is mean because it shows us how people would be talked to. I think its takes away from the story because it shows how impolite people are. I never really thought about when people say other words that are mean and impolite. I say things like thats gay and never really thought about how it could affect people. Its wrong to say but everyone does it.

i didnt feel anything about that N word because i hear it lots in life and i have even used it. It is also in alot of music and videos now. I think it adds to it because that was a well used term in history and its helps ad to the racisem. I dont mind it i dont take offence to words unless they are apointed to me. Everyone says different words today i think they have lost most meaning to them now.
ReplyDeleteWell I have read a book with the N word in it before so i wasn't really that surprised. It adds to the story because it think if thats how it was back then, thats the way it should be in the book. It is pretty common now so it doesn't really surprise me or any thing and I'm not gonna lie by saying I don't use them because I do but I don't realize how bad it sounds when I do say things like that. Things like that aren't good to say but people say them all the time so I think other people justify saying it because lots of other people do.
ReplyDeleteI think it is totally differnt in the book because when you read it you dont say it out loud. When you say it out loud then you hurt everybody around you when you read it in a book then the author is just trying to express some kind of feeling or speach. I think the author shouldn't of put the N word in the book but there is alot worse people who say it to a persons face.
ReplyDeletehmm well my general opinion of using words like N and R in a book situation is reletivly ok if it adds to the story. In this case, it shows the insensitivity of scout to the negro people. There was also obvoiusly no polityically correct terms and also people didnt mind saying N at all. I find it insensitive but i dont really open my mouth if anyone says that stuff because i can stand it.
