Welcome

One of our themes for ELA this semester is Recollection: A Journey Back. As part of this section, we will be reading the novel To Kill A Mockingbird (one of my favourites!!!). In order to help prepare you for reading this novel, you need to complete the following introduction assignments:
1) Read this website (http://www.ferris.edu/news/jimcrow/what.htm) to learn about "Jim Crow". This information is crucial to you understanding the setting of TKAM. Once you have finished reading all the information, post a response to the Jim Crow Post. The question is "Write your reaction to the article and describe the three things that shocked you the most about Jim Crow".
2) Personal Opinion: Read the following statements and respond to them in the Personal Opinion Post. Choose three of them and recopy them and write a 2-3 sentence reaction to why you agree or disagree with the statement.
a) All men are created equal.
b) Girls should act like girls.
c) It's okay to be different.
d) Nobody is all bad or all good.
e) Some words are so offensive that they should never be stated or written.
f) Under our justice system, all citizens are treated fairly in our courts of law.
g) The old adage, "Sticks and stones may break your bones, but words will never hurt you," is true.
h) Speaking standard grammar proves that a person is smart.
i) A hero is born, not made.
j) No one is above the law.
k) Education is the great equalizer.
l) When the law does not succeed in punishing criminals, citizens should do so.
